Finding the Color Gear You Need
Basically every model of catchers gear being sold today has the "standard" colors available.
You know, colors like gray, black, and even blue.
Yet many times, catchers need gear that match the color of their team.
And many teams have colors that are not the standard gray, black and blue that we just mentioned!
Understandably, this leads many players and parents to look for specific colors of catcher’s gear.
And it's not always easy to find the color you need.
That's why we wrote this article - to help our readers by making it simple to find the different catcher's gear color options available.
How We Selected Our Picks
We canvassed the market to identify NOCSAE-approved gear that is being manufactured in different colors, then organized those selections based on available colors.
In this post you will see our “preferred pick” followed by a “runner up” pick by color, as well as a list of other options for each color.
Our preferred and runner up picks typically follow picks you will find in our “best of” posts on the site, meaning they were chosen based on a combination of safety, cost, and quality.
We’d encourage you to read more of the posts on this site in order to get a better understanding of the pro’s and con’s of specific models mentioned in this post.
Also, our picks below show the complete catcher’s gear set - meaning, it contains a catcher’s helmet, chest protector and leg guards.
Many times people look for a specific color of chest protector or helmet, for example, while keeping the other pieces of their gear a standard black, blue or gray. We get that.
If you don’t need a complete set, then we suggest using our picks as a starting point to understand which models contain the color you need, then finding the specific piece of equipment you need from there.
Secondary Colors of Catcher’s Gear
When we refer to “Secondary Colors”, we are talking about any colors that aren’t the black, gray and blue mentioned above. These are common colors sold in practically every catcher’s gear model on the market.
Keep reading to see our recommendations and other available options organized by the color of gear.
Red Catcher’s Gear
For Baseball catchers, our top choice for red catcher’s gear is the All Star System7 Axis Pro set. This is the top of the line model from All-Star, and a perennial front runner in many of our “best of” posts. Also, All Star has an excellent reputation for making quality goods, and their gear is used by many in the NCAA ranks and above.
Our runner-up choice for Baseball catcher’s gear that comes in red is the Easton Elite X set. Elite X gear is high-quality and comfortable, and it’s actually more affordable than Eason’s Pro X lineup.
For Fastpitch Softball catchers, our top pick for red gear is Jen Schro’s The Very Best. This unique and durable gear is Easton’s newest offering for Softball catchers. The gear was engineered specifically for females and is premium level in every sense of the word.
All Star’s Vela Pro set (two-tone) is our runner up choice for Fastpitch players needing red catchers gear. Its chest protector and leg guards are lightweight yet provide excellent protection. Also, its classic System 7, ABS-shell helmet is one of the toughest and most popular catcher’s helmets in use today.
There are many red catcher’s gear sets on the market, and other available options include the following:
All-Star Intermediate System 7 Axis Elite Travel Team
Mizuno Samurai Men's Adult Baseball
All-Star Intermediate System 7
Louisville Slugger Youth PG Series 5
Easton The Fundamental by Jen Schro
All-Star Adult System 7 Axis Pro Camo
All-Star Adult System 7 Axis Pro
All-Star Intermediate Players Series
All Star Women's Fastpitch Series
Under Armour PTH Victory Series
Green Catcher’s Gear
A handful of teams use green as a primary color, which means green catcher’s gear is also a sought after color. For green, our top choice for Baseball catchers is Easton’s Elite X. The gear is excellent quality and affordable, and it comes in a nice green and silver two-tone design.
Our runner-up pick is the Mizuno Samurai set. Samurai gear has recently been re-designed, and the new design comes in a sharp-looking green/black/gray pattern.
For Fastpitch Softball catchers, our top recommendation for green gear is - like our pick for red - Jen Schro’s The Very Best. It has a solid color design with a subtle amount of white added. It looks good.
All-Star Vela gear is our runner-up choice for Fastpitch catchers in need of green catcher’s equipment. This gear is dark green with certain sections (mostly outlines) in gray.
If you’re still interested in looking for catcher’s equipment in green, then check out the following:
All-Star Intermediate System 7 Axis Elite Travel Team
White Catcher’s Gear
White catchers gear always looks good in my opinion. It has a classy look behind the plate.
For white gear, our top pick for Baseball is the Rawlings Adult Velo 2.0. This set scores high marks for breathability and ventilation, as well as flexibility. Though the helmet is solid white, the rest of the gear has a gray/white pattern.
The runner-up choice for Baseball catchers is the Wilson C1K set. This is a good set from the world renowned Wilson brand. However, you should be aware that the color arrangement is more silver than white.
Coming in again at first place for Fastpitch catchers is Jen Schro’s The Very Best. The white gear looks incredible, with some subtle black added in for contrast. We are big fans of this one.
The runner-up for Softball catcher’s needing white gear is All-Star Vela Pro. The model that comes in white is two-tone, with the majority being white and outlines in a second color. The basic white version is the one with a black outline.
For catchers in need of white catchers gear, a few additional options to consider are below:
Easton The Fundamental by Jen Schro
Orange Catcher’s Gear
Although orange is not one of the most popular colors of catcher’s gear, that which is manufactured looks sharp. Like Easton’s Elite X, our top choice for Baseball catchers needing to find orange colored catcher’s gear.
Or you can check out the Rawlings Adult Velo 2.0 set, our runner-up choice for Baseball. This set is a true two-tone, with lots of black included in the color pattern.
Our top orange pick for Fastpitch Softball catchers is the Mizuno Samurai Women’s set. It looks really good, though the color is predominantly dark gray with a orange outline.
Another orange option for Fastpitch catchers is the Wilson C1K set, our runner-up choice. This also has a multi-color design, with black featuring prominently.
If you want to take a look at other catcher’s equipment in orange, then you can check out these sets:
All-Star Intermediate System 7 Axis Elite Travel Team
Mizuno Samurai Men's Adult Baseball
Louisville Slugger Youth PG Series 5
Yellow Catcher’s Gear
Yellow is another secondary color used by many teams. Good news is that there is some yellow catcher’s gear on the market.
Our top yellow gear pick for Baseball is the All-Star System7 Axis Elite Travel Team set. You have two options in this set - one that has a yellow and green pattern, and one that has a more neutral yellow and gray pattern. Either way, System 7 Axis gear is some of the best catcher’s gear on the planet, so you can’t go wrong there.
Mizuno Samurai is our runner-up pick for Baseball catchers in need of yellow catchers equipment. Like other colors of Samurai gear, the yellow appears in the outline of the gear. It is predominantly black and gray.
For Fastpitch Softball backstops in need of yellow gear, our pick is Mizuno Samurai Womens. Like its Baseball counterpart, the Softball version of Samurai gear only displays the yellow as an outline with gray featuring prominently.
We do not have a runner-up pick for Fastpitch - nor do we have other options for Baseball - because there are few models of yellow catchers gear currently on the market.
Gold Catcher’s Gear
Our next color is a close companion of yellow. While not much, there is some distinctly gold catcher’s gear on the market.
The top choice for Baseball catchers is the All-Star Adult System 7 Axis Pro set. This high-quality gear comes in a nice gold and black two tone pattern.
Our runner-up pick for gold gear for Baseball is Easton’s Elite X. It looks somewhat similar to the above System 7 Axis Pro set, yet sells at a lower price point.
Unfortunately we do not have specific recommendations for Fastpitch catchers in need of catcher’s equipment in gold, as we haven’t found any. Our recommendation would be to choose a neutral color (ie, black or gray catcher’s gear) or consider the yellow version of the Mizuno Samurai Women’s gear if you can make that color work.
Purple Catcher’s Gear
Fortunately there is more purple catchers gear on the market than there is yellow or gold!
For Baseball, our top choice is Easton’s Elite X set. It is predominantly purple with some strategically placed silver throughout. We think it looks really sharp.
The runner-up choice for Baseball catchers needing purple gear is the Rawlings Velo 2.0 set. It's interlaced with silver and has some white in it, though purple is the predominant color.
Our top purple choice for Fastpitch Softball catchers is Jen Schro's The Very Best. This model - a regular front runner - sports a shiny purple on the helmet, chest protector and leg guards interlaced with a small amount of white.
Our runner up pick for Softball catchers needing purple gear is the All-Star Vela Pro. Like the Jen Schro model, Vela gear is also high-quality. The purple in this gear shines and has some silver (and a small amount of white) added into the pattern.
Other models of catcher’s gear in purple available include the following:
All-Star System 7 Axis Elite Travel Team
Maroon Catcher’s Gear
All-Star, Mizuno and Easton are some of the major brands that make maroon catcher’s gear. Our top pick for Baseball catchers is the All-Star System 7 Axis Pro set. Axis gear, a favorite of many, sells a maroon model of gear that is interlaced with gray and a touch of white on the logo.
Easton Elite X is our runner-up maroon pick for Baseball. It has some similarities in look to the Axis gear, though its secondary color is more silver than gray.
For Fastpitch Softball catchers, our top choice for maroon catchers gear is - once again - Jen Schro’s The Very Best. In addition to being a great set, it is available in a variety of colors, which is a great feature. The maroon model has a small amount of white tastefully designed in, similar to the other colors they feature.
Similar to our picks for purple gear, our runner-up for maroon Fastpitch catcher’s gear is the All-Star Vela Pro set. This features a subtly brighter shade of maroon with a light gray as its secondary color.
Additional options for catcher’s equipment in maroon are:
Pink Catcher’s Gear
We have been unable to find any pink catcher’s gear sets being manufactured by brands currently.
There is a bit of a caveat to that, actually. Some individual pieces of catcher’s gear are sold in pink. For example, the AiR Maxx 2966 helmet from Schutt comes in pink.
In addition, you may be able to find older Softball gear (or some that’s been specifically customized in the past) for sale on eBay. If you are really wanting pink equipment, then it’s at least worth the time to check there.
Also, some equipment manufactures allow you to customize their equipment, such as All-Star. You can take this approach and see if they allow pink customization.
Camo Catcher’s Gear
We know quite a few catcher’s that love the camo look. If that’s you, then your best bet is to go with the All-Star Adult System7 Axis Camo Pro set.
As you know if you’ve been reading along in this post, Axis gear is some of the best catcher’s gear on the market. The fact that they also make camo patterned gear is an added bonus.
Additionally, Axis gear comes in a few different colors. Though gray is the dominant color in this gear, typically black, blue or red camo interlaced with the gray are available.
Outside of the Axis set, we know that Diamond manufactures camo chest protectors and leg guards (the iX5 version). Also, at one time the Easton M10 chest protector came in camouflage option. Both are worth checking out if you’re not interested in the Axis model.
American Flag Catcher’s Gear
Some US based catchers may be interested in using American flag catchers gear (also referred to as red white and blue catchers gear).
The good news is that it exists and you have a few options to choose from.
Our top pick for Baseball catchers is the All-Star Adult System7 Axis Pro set. On this set, red, white and blue feature prominently. The ab section of the chest protector features the stars on the blue background, making it clear that it’s modeled after the flag. It looks sweet.
The runner-up pick for Baseball is the Wilson C1K set. Though not specifically modeled off of the US flag, it’s red, blue and gray (with some white) give it a theme that’s distinctly American.
For Fastpitch catchers, Jen Schro’s The Very Best features a great American flag-themed option. The white is the primary color on this model, with the stars prominent on the chest protector and red and blue added throughout.
Similar to our runner-up pick for Baseball, we also recommend Wilson C1K as the runner-up choice for Fastpitch catchers needing American flag catchers gear.
Catchers can also check out Rawlings Velo 2.0 gear and Louisville Slugger Youth PG Series 5 gear. Though they're mostly a navy blue and red pattern, they give off that American flag feel.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
If I'm buying a new catcher's gear set and I plan to use it for a few years, should I get a plain color or a unique/specific color?
In this circumstance, we recommend choosing a neutral color because there could be a lot of variability in the teams you'll be playing on in the years ahead. For example, if your team colors are purple this year, there's no guarantee they will be the next year. Good neutral colors in our mind are black, gray or navy blue. Ultimately, though, it's up to you on what your personal preference is.
Can I paint my catcher's gear a different color?
It is possible to paint certain pieces of catcher's gear, but we don't recommend it. If you'd like to know why, click this link to an article we wrote where we address this very question (and many others like it).
I'm not having any luck finding the color gear that I need. What should I do?
If you used one of our links above and the gear you're interested in is out of stock, then we recommend using eBay to search for the gear you have in mind. Often, eBay has a wide variety of new and used products and you may very well have luck using it to find your gear. You can also check local sporting goods stores to see what's in stock, but keep in mind that they typically don't have much variety to choose from.
That's a Wrap!
Hopefully this post provided you with some helpful guidance in terms of secondary colors of catcher’s gear that you might need.
There is a ton of gear out there, so it’s useful to separate these from the models that only come in the standard black, gray and blue.
If you were unable to find a specific color - or if one of the models we linked to were out of stock for the color needed - then we suggest searching the inventory on eBay. They tend to have a good amount of catcher's gear in stock at any one time.
If you have any specific questions or comments, don't hesitate to contact us. Thanks for reading!
