Shea Langeliers Called the Game at the 2026 All-Star Game
The 2026 All-Star Game gave a national audience a rare look at what a catcher actually does — and Shea Langeliers was the one running the show.
Two days ago, we wrote about Shea Langeliers earning his spot as the AL’s starting catcher — the first A’s backstop to do it since Terry Steinbach in 1989. On Tuesday night in Philadelphia, he showed up and did the job.
Citizens Bank Park, All-Star Game. The American League against the best the National League could send.
Langeliers started behind the plate for the AL. At the dish he went 1-for-1 — a walk in the first, a single to center to lead off the third. Clean. Quiet. Not the headline number.
The headline was what he did with Dylan Cease.
Cease took the mound with the FOX broadcast running a live mic on the battery. The country got to listen. Langeliers put down the signs. Cease threw the pitches. Kyle Schwarber struck out. Juan Soto struck out. CJ Abrams struck out. Three of the four batters Cease faced went down swinging, and the broadcast made the connection plain: the pitch-calling was working.
At one point, Cease could be heard asking Langeliers whether to throw a front-door sinker. He answered himself — “Let’s do it” — and threw it anyway. The conversation was live, the decision was theirs, and the country heard a catcher’s thinking in real time at the All-Star Game.
That almost never happens on national television. The pitcher gets the strikeout. The catcher gets nothing. Tuesday night, the catcher got credit.
Cody Bellinger took MVP honors — the AL won 4-0 and Bellinger’s bat was the difference. But the moment that will stick with every kid who catches was Langeliers behind the dish, working Cease through a lineup neither of them had faced together, in front of the whole country.
Langeliers came into the break leading all AL catchers in home runs, batting .264 with an .822 OPS. The numbers say he belongs. The 37-year gap says how rare this kind of career moment is — the last A’s catcher to start an All-Star Game was Steinbach in 1989.

He was a ninth-overall pick out of Baylor in 2019, a Gold Glove winner as a college sophomore, five seasons into a rebuild with Oakland. Tuesday he was a starter at the Midsummer Classic, calling pitches for the American League.
What a catcher can learn from this
Calling pitches is not decoration. It is the job.
The pitcher gets the glory when the strikeout happens. The catcher gets no line in the box score for a slider low-and-away that the hitter chases. But Langeliers has built his career on exactly that work — the invisible reps that only show up in the opponent’s empty swing.
Here is what you can copy at your next practice: before your next outing, study one hitter you are going to face. Watch video if you can. Ask your coaches what they have seen. Come in with a pitch sequence in mind — not a rigid script, but a plan. When Cease wound up in front of the whole country, Langeliers was not guessing. He was executing.
That is the catcher’s job. Sweat the gear, do the homework, and you earn the moments nobody else can claim.
Try this at your next practice
- Pre-game scouting card. Before your next start, pick one opposing hitter and write down three pitches you plan to throw them and in what order. Show it to your pitcher before warmups. It does not need to be perfect — it needs to be a plan.
- Film a pitch-calling session. Set up your phone to record from behind during a bullpen or live BP. Watch it back and ask: did my signs come out clean? Was I decisive, or did I change the sign twice? Langeliers was decisive on every pitch in front of a national audience.
- The sinker conversation. Cease asked Langeliers a question mid-inning — in front of the country — and Langeliers answered by staying in the plan. Practice talking to your pitcher between batters. Short, clear, one idea. “Keep working low.” “His hands are late.” That communication is the job.
