The game also has roots in the state that go way back to the mid 19th century.
As one of the most populous states in the US, Ohio has a wide variety of baseball teams located across the state.
You usually won’t have to travel far to see a high-level baseball game, whether you’re down south near the Ohio River or up near Lake Erie.

How Many Ohio Baseball Teams Are There?
As of 2023, Ohio has 20 baseball teams competing in the major, minor, independent league and NCAA D1 levels.
Five of these teams compete in Major League Baseball, nine in minor league baseball, and seven in independent baseball.

There are two Major League Baseball (MLB) teams in Ohio, giving the Buckeye State the distinction of being one of only eight US states with more than one MLB franchise.

The International League is one two triple A leagues in the MiLB. Triple A is the highest level of competitive play in the minors, just one step removed from the big leagues.

NCAA Division 1 (D1) Baseball Teams in Ohio
College baseball is a lot of fun to watch, especially at the highest (D1) level.
It’s super competitive baseball played by lots of really talented players. One of the great things as well is that they start playing early in the winter - much earlier than MLB or MiLB teams.
So if you’re craving some February or March baseball like we often do, you can’t go wrong visiting your local D1 program.
In Ohio, there are lots of opportunities to watch college baseball. In fact, there are 12 D1 baseball programs in the state. (And that number doesn’t count the multiple D2, D3 and lower level college programs out there).
