Daniel Jackson’s First Pro Four-Hit Game

The best player in college baseball started his professional career at the lowest full-season level in the Rockies organization — and eleven games in, the swing came with him.
Daniel Jackson spent last spring as the best amateur baseball player in the United States. Today he’s part of the Colorado Rockies Single-A club.
He won the Golden Spikes Award on June 29, live on MLB Network. USA Baseball hands that trophy to the best college player in the country. Jackson won it as a catcher. Then he swept the rest: the Buster Posey Award for the top catcher in Division I, the Dick Howser Trophy, the SEC Triple Crown.
The numbers underneath the trophies explain why. No catcher in Division I history had reached 30 home runs and 25 stolen bases in the same season. Jackson finished at Georgia with 32 and 26. In fact, he was only the third Division I player at any position ever to do it.
MLB Pipeline had him 39th on its draft board. So Colorado took him 37th overall in July. He signed for $2,297,500, about $400,000 under the slot value, which is the bonus the league recommends for that pick.
And then Daniel Jackson went to Fresno.
The Fresno Grizzlies are the Rockies’ Single-A club in the California League, the lowest full-season level in the organization. Jackson is 21 years old. He pulled on a new uniform and started over at his first professional game.
Eleven games later, the swing had followed him west.
Fresno hosted the Stockton Ports at Chukchansi Park on Sunday, August 23. Jackson singled in the fourth inning. Then he singled again in the sixth.
In the ninth he doubled and drove a run home. He singled once more in the tenth. Fresno won it 10-9 in eleven innings.
The box score read four hits in six at-bats, with three runs batted in. It was Jackson’s first four-hit game as a professional.
Four hits is four separate problems solved. Jackson walked back to the dugout after that fourth-inning single carrying nothing forward, then started clean in the sixth. He started clean again in the ninth, and again in the tenth, deep into an afternoon that ran eleven innings. Each trip to the plate was its own pitcher, its own count, its own plan.

That is his line at Fresno so far, with multiple hits in five of those games. Still, it is a small sample, and everybody in the Rockies organization knows it. So read the line for what it is: evidence that what made him great at Georgia got on the plane.
Because the trophies stayed back in Athens, Georgia. What travelled was quieter: the swing, the eye, the willingness to treat the fourth at-bat like the first one. A Golden Spikes Award has never gotten anybody a hit in the California League. The work that earned the award does that, and it is the same work waiting at your next practice.

Try this at your next practice
- Four rounds, cold start. Take five swings, then leave the cage completely — put your helmet down, walk to the fence, talk to somebody. Come back and take five more. Do it four times. The hard part of a four-hit day is not the swing; it is arriving at round four with nothing carried over from round one.
- The pitcher notebook. After every game, write down what each pitcher tried to do to you. Not whether you got a hit — what they threw, and when. Four hits comes from four different plans, and you only build plans from what you noticed the last time.
- Bullpen the day after. Catch a full pitcher’s bullpen the day after you have a big game at the plate. The position does not care what you hit yesterday, and the catchers who last are the ones whose glove work never tracks their batting average.
