Reese Atwood Wins All-Star Cup Defensive MVP
Her bat has been quiet all week in the AUSL All-Star Cup — and the competition’s own scoring system just moved her up 14 places for what she did behind the plate.
Reese Atwood caught seven innings on August 23 and gave up nothing. Her pitchers allowed two hits. The other team never scored.
Atwood is the 2026 AUSL Rookie of the Year and a Rawlings Gold Glove winner out of Texas. The Carolina Blaze took her seventh overall in this year’s draft, and she hit .309 with 8 home runs and 25 RBI in the regular season.
But the Blaze season is over. What she is playing in now is the AUSL All-Star Cup, and the Cup is not a team competition in the usual sense. Every player carries her own point total, and that ledger is the entire scoreboard. Points come from winning, from what a player does at the plate and in the field, and from MVP honors.
Every few days the top three players on the leaderboard become captains and draft brand-new teams around themselves. So the rosters keep changing and the names keep changing. The number next to your own name is the only thing that follows you.
Through six games of the Cup, Atwood’s bat had gone quiet.

Three hits. In a competition where the ledger is the whole game, that kind of stretch buries a player.
So Atwood went out on August 23 and caught a shutout instead.
She was catching for Team Klingler that day, in the game that closed Series 3, against Team Palacios at Parkway Bank Sports Complex. Amber Fiser started and Lexi Kilfoyl finished. Across seven innings the two of them gave up two hits and one walk and struck out five.
Kenzie Brown was every bit as good for the other side. She threw a complete game and also allowed exactly two hits, on 100 pitches. Two hits each, then. What separated the teams was one error.
Sydney Romero reached on it in the first inning, and Baylee Klingler brought her home with a sacrifice fly. That was the only run either team scored.
When the game ended, the Defensive MVP award went to the catcher.
Two pitchers threw that shutout. One catcher called all seven innings of it, and Atwood has been doing that job all season. The AUSL’s own write-up of her Rookie of the Year award credits her with guiding a Carolina Blaze staff to the third-lowest ERA in the league, 4.08, working most often with rookie pitcher Karlyn Pickens.
None of that shows up next to her name in a box score. But all of it is why a pitcher wants her back there.
Across Series 3, Atwood climbed 14 places on the leaderboard and into the top 15 with one series left. That was the second-biggest jump on her own team; Fiser moved up 13. Meanwhile, Baylee Klingler is now 4-0 as an All-Star Cup captain and leads the board with 890 points.
Sharlize Palacios had topped that same leaderboard coming out of Series 2. Yet on August 23 it was her team that got shut out.
The Cup’s math paid Atwood for the shutout, and it never asked her to apologize for the three hits.
One series is left. A new draft was held on August 24, and this time Atwood goes to Team Kilfoyl. So she will be catching again for one of the pitchers from that shutout. First pitch is Friday, August 28, at 7 p.m. Eastern on CBS Sports Network.
Here is what a young catcher should take from all of it. Your bat will go silent. Everyone’s does. But the pitcher still has to throw to somebody.
So you spend those innings learning her. Which pitch has bite tonight. What she does when she is tired. Where she wants the target. That work wins games whether or not you ever reach base, and going 0-for does not cancel a single inning of it. Reese Atwood just climbed 14 places to prove it. - The bullpen notebook. Catch a full bullpen and write down three things afterward: which pitch had the most movement today, which one your pitcher lost command of, and what she did differently when she got tired. Bring the notes to your next game. This is the homework that earns a Defensive MVP award, and it costs you a pencil.
- Shutout scorekeeping. Catch an inning of live batting practice or a scrimmage and keep your own score of it. Count every pitch you received cleanly, every ball you kept in front, every borderline call you held. None of that reaches a box score, and all of it decides games.
- The hitless-game list. After any game where you go 0-for, write down three things you did behind the plate that helped your team. Not consolation — evidence. Atwood went 3-for-16 in this competition and still climbed 14 places, because the work she does in the squat scores on its own.
