Ryder Helfrick Homers in Pro Debut for Visalia

The D-backs’ 15th overall pick went 3-for-6 with a go-ahead homer on night one — proof that defense-first catchers who master the fundamentals don’t fall behind at the plate.

Ryder Helfrick spent three seasons at Arkansas doing something no other college catcher could match. He framed pitches. He blocked balls in the dirt. He threw runners out. And on the defensive side of the ledger, he was untouchable: 27.00 defensive runs saved, the highest mark of any college catcher in the country.

The Arizona Diamondbacks noticed. On draft day 2026, they called his name 15th overall. Helfrick became the first catcher in Arkansas Razorbacks history to be drafted in the first round. The D-backs then signed him for $5,241,000 on July 20. He was also a Golden Spikes Award semifinalist — USA Baseball’s highest honor for a college player.

So that is who stepped into the batter’s box for the Visalia Rawhide on August 5, 2026, fewer than three weeks after signing. During his first MLB game, Helfrick went 3-for-6. He drove in the go-ahead run with a home run. Visalia won 10-9.

The run that put his team ahead. In extra innings. Night one.

Try this at your next practice

  • The 90-Second Lock-In Drill. Before each round of batting practice, crouch behind the plate for 90 seconds and call every pitch. The goal is to carry your receiving focus directly into the batter’s box — the same concentration Helfrick showed across eleven innings behind the plate and then again at the dish.
  • Pitch-Recognition Tee Work. Have a coach or teammate hold a ball at three different pitch-zone heights and call “go” before you swing from the tee. Force yourself to identify location before you pull the trigger. This trains the same pitch-reading instincts that make a defensive catcher dangerous at the plate.
  • Framing-to-Hitting Transition Reps. Do five framing reps behind the plate — full crouch, glove extended, receive and present — then immediately step in and take five live swings. The switch between modes, done repeatedly, trains your brain to carry the focus from behind the dish into the box.
