Mcartney Harrington Grand Slam Wins NC Softball Title

The catcher who leads the staff also leads the lineup when it counts.

Every team in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) Class 6A field knew South Caldwell was coming back to defend.

Defending champions wear a target. For example, every pitcher studies them a little harder. Every infield cheers a little louder when the champs go down. When you are the team that won last year, you do not sneak up on anyone.

Mcartney Harrington is the catcher at South Caldwell, from Taylorsville in the western foothills of North Carolina. She bats in the middle of a lineup that has been building toward something for two straight seasons. This year she hit .546, with 15 home runs, 52 RBI, and 19 doubles. In the Extra Innings Softball national catcher rankings, she sits at No. 9. In North Carolina, she is No. 1. In the fall, she heads to Clemson.

But first there was a championship series, and a moment when South Caldwell needed a run.

Harrington came up in the 2026 NCHSAA Class 6A championship series against Union Pines with runners aboard. She hit a grand slam.

South Caldwell took the series. As a result, they are back-to-back state champions — 2025 and 2026. Harrington was named Championship Series MVP.

Yet here is what that grand slam does not show you: the entire season behind the plate that made it possible.

Harrington called pitches all year. She read lineups, adjusted to what opponents chased, and protected her pitcher’s confidence deep into close games. A catcher who hits .546 is not just a hitter. She is the player who takes a foul tip off the mask in the third inning. Then she pops up, fires the ball back, and does not let anyone in the dugout see that it stung. Tenacity is what shows up in the big moment. Specifically, the willingness to take the hard part of the position and make it look effortless.

So when the game needed four runs, she had already earned the right to swing.

North Carolina voters agreed. Harrington took 43.66 percent of the fan vote for the 2026 North Carolina High School Softball Player of the Year. In addition, MaxPreps named her the state’s Softball Player of the Year as well.

Two titles. Two years. One catcher running the show from behind the plate and producing from the middle of the lineup.

Try this at your next practice

  • Grand slam count work. Ask your coach to put runners on all three bases during BP. Then step in with the mindset that you need to drive them all in. Not every at-bat needs that weight. Still, practicing under pressure builds the calmness that Harrington carried into that championship at-bat.
  • Lineup-book drill. After each game, write down two things you noticed about the opposing hitters: one pitch they chased and one they laid off. Harrington’s preparation behind the plate is what earned her the trust to swing when it counted. So remember: the defensive catcher and the offensive producer are the same player. Sweat the gear and never fear.
