Reese Atwood Hits First Career WCWS Home Run to Send Texas to the Championship Series

The pitch arrived. Atwood swung. The ball cleared the center-field wall at Devon Park.
Texas catcher Reese Atwood led off the top of the fourth inning with a solo home run against Tennessee on June 1. It was her first career Women’s College World Series home run. The Longhorns won that opening semifinal game 5-2.
In Game 2, Atwood delivered again. She ripped an RBI double in the third inning to help Texas shut out Tennessee 4-0. With the sweep, the Longhorns punched their ticket to the WCWS Championship Series against Texas Tech, which begins June 3.
Atwood understands pressure. The 2025 Johnny Bench Award winner and three-time NFCA All-American anchors the Longhorn lineup. Just two days earlier, she drew a pivotal walk that broke a Nebraska no-hit bid and kept Texas alive in an elimination game. Now, the recent AUSL draft pick is using her power to push Texas toward a title.
What a catcher can learn from this
Great catchers make their biggest marks when everything is on the line. Excellence develops in practice, but it is expressed under pressure.
Atwood spent four years at Texas perfecting her craft behind the plate. She mastered blocking, framing, and managing a pitching staff. When her team needed her most on the final weekend of her college career, she delivered at the plate.
Trust your preparation when the lights shine the brightest. You do not have to change your approach in a big game. You just have to execute the skills you practice every day.
