Kendall Wells International Cup Debut: Olympic Audition Starts July 30

The 2026 USA Softball International Cup opens July 30 — and Oklahoma’s freshman catcher is in the bracket as a national team starter.
In two days, Kendall Wells will pull on a Team USA uniform and walk into Devon Park.
She spent her freshman year at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, just down the road from Devon Park. As we covered on July 24, she earned a spot in the USA Softball Women’s National Team Athlete Pool after a freshman year nobody in Division I history had matched. Now the Women’s Elite Team roster is set, and Wells is on it. The 2026 USA Softball International Cup opens July 30 at Devon Park in Oklahoma City and runs through August 3.
This is not the junior circuit. Six nations compete, including No. 1-ranked Japan. So the women in this bracket are competing for 2028 Olympic roster spots. Los Angeles hosts the Games. But the audition starts here, in Oklahoma.
Devon Park is familiar ground for Wells. After all, she made her name a short drive from this stadium. Now she steps back into this state as a national team catcher. Still, the stakes are an entirely different kind of weight.
There is one more layer. Her OU head coach, Patty Gasso, now leads Team USA. Wells already knows Gasso’s pitching philosophy and her game-day approach. She knows how Gasso wants a catcher to run a staff when the pressure peaks. That continuity matters when everything else is unfamiliar.
The International Cup asks the same questions any big game does. Can you call the right pitch against elite competition? Can you shut down the running game? Can you hold a pitcher together when the moment is biggest? Wells answered those questions at the college level. July 30 is the next one.
What a catcher can learn from this
The pipeline from youth ball to a national team jersey looks long when you are at the bottom of it. But Wells compressed it in one season.
She did not get here on 39 home runs alone. The Johnny Bench Award is the top honor for a Division I catcher. It goes to the best all-around catcher, not the best bat. So the selectors watched her post a .993 fielding percentage in 60 starts and allow just 3 stolen bases all year. They also watched her manage a pitching staff through an SEC schedule. The bat followed the preparation. That order is the lesson.
The drills you are running right now are the same work Wells put in to get here. The blocks in the dirt, the pop throws, the hours in the squat. Devon Park is further down the road. But it is the same road.
Try this at your next practice
- Pop-throw efficiency drill. Set up with a catcher, pitcher, and a second base target. Focus on exchange and footwork speed, not arm strength alone. Wells held opposing base runners to just 3 stolen bases in 60 starts — the throw matters, but so does everything before the throw. Time your exchange from the mitt pocket to release; keep it under 0.6 seconds.
- Pitcher check-in reps. After every two or three bullpen pitches, have your catcher walk out to the mound (no ball in hand) and say one specific, calm thing to the pitcher before walking back. The goal is to build the habit of active communication — the kind of game management that earns a coach’s trust and eventually earns a team USA look.
- High-leverage sequence calling. At the end of practice, run a 10-pitch “final at-bat” scenario: runners on base, two outs, last inning. The catcher calls every pitch without input from the coach. Debrief after: what did the catcher read, and why? Calling the game under pressure is a teachable skill. Wells built it one decision at a time.
